The forecast was for it to drop later in the day so we went to the same lower small take off the other side the mountain. It was starting to drop so they ran the task. I wasn't too keen to fly as it looked a bit strong, but the woman who I thought was in second took off and I couldn't afford to have no points compared to minimum distance points. So I set up and took off and flew to the bottom. It had been a bit hit and miss if you got up again so they were allowing people to come back up and try again. It was too late for me to go up and try again, so I wasn't sure what position I'd
come.

We looked at the results later and found that I was second woman, was still 6th in
sports class, and finished 34th overall. :-)

Results

Portugal

Again, sorry it's been a while, but not much to write about really. Spent twelve days in Ager, started with the Artik 2 but on the second day I was almost ready to give up flying altogther. So the next flights I made on the Tattoo, didn't really do any more than top to bottoms but my confidence has been a little low.

We left Ager and drove to a campsite near Madrid, very nice and a bit expensive especially as we were too late for the swimming pool. We arrived in Portugal on Friday 31st and found the free camping. Saturday we were sitting outside the camp van watching guys jumping out of a helicopter doing acro. There were two shows on Saturday and two on Sunday. We got a lift up the hill on Sunday evening and watched the final acro show from take off. Then we were able to fly down.

Monday 2nd August was the first day of the competition, and we went to briefing at 9:30am and waited a few hours before going up to take off. The task was a turnpoint down the ridge (in to wind) and then 50k to goal. Typically I was one of the last pilots to take off, and that was with some help. Once I was off though it didn't take long to find a thermal and I was climbing nicely. It was great being able to get so high, but only to find I was still over take off. It took a while to even get to the start which was only just over one km away. I was about 3km from the first turnpoint and a hill got in the way so I landed! It was a bit of a walk to get to a village, but I was so happy about the flight and thermalling that I wasn't too bothered.

Tuesday 3rd August. We went to look at the results and John came in 4th, and I was 32nd, Team Parapikeys are 5th and I am top women (out of 6) and 6th in the sports class! :-) What a result! We drove to a different take off today which was over an hour away, unfortunately when we got up to the top the wind was over the back. Around 2pm there was a briefing where the results were announced from yesterday and I got around of applause for top woman. How odd was that! They took us to a place at the bottom of the hill by a river. I had a little paddle but John went for a swim, then we had a couple of beers before heading back to Linhares. We were able to do to some well needed grocery shopping on the way back too.

Just relaxing outside looking forward to one of John's chicken curries :-)

Greece to Itlaly to France to Spain

Sorry it's been a while since I posted anything. :-( Since Greece we drove to Olympic Wings and camped near the beach. We went up to the dried lake, John took off and Stelios was ready to take off but the wind picked up as a storm was brewing. So John landed and we packed up and headed back. Had a lovely meal in the square, grilled meat and lovely Greek salad. :-)

The next day I had a couple of flights from the little Church, which was where I had my first ever flight all those years ago. They were short flights and I'm still trying to get to grips with my wing. I'll keep persisting!

Next day we set off to the port with cake and cucumber! The ferry was a little disapointing compared to the one from Italy and we had to go up on deck in the middle of the night for some fresh air.

The drive throught Italy to San Potito was very scenic and it changed so much as we drove closer to our destination. The camping at San Potito was another football field but with even less facilities than the Greek PWC. I didn't fly during the week as take off was usually a two hour bus ride and the organisation could hardly account for the competition pilots let alone a free flier.

From San Potito we went to Rome. What a beautiful city! We went to St Peter's Basilica, the Pantheon and the Colossuem.

That eveing we intended to watch to World Cup football final at the campsite bit they had problems getting it on the big TV. We ate our pizza quickly and went out in search of World Cup, it didn't take long as there was a football pitch showing it just across the road :-)

The next day we drove to Florence, the first campsite was more like a car park for a Youth Hostel, so we tried another. It wasn't cheap but it had the most amazing view of Florence from the swimming pool! The following day we did Florence, visiting the Cathedral and bridge and the Uffizi. It was very hot and I was exhausted by the time we got back.

We had one stopover in France before we got to Ager. The European Handgliding comp is on here at the moment and the Brits are currently in 4th position. We have flown twice since we got here and spent a lot of time baking on launch waiting for the wind to die down. Anyway I'm still not sure about my Artik 2, as much as I would love to fly it. Trying the Tattoo next time it's possible, maybe not tomorrow but the weather looks better after that.

Greece or Glastonbury?

Saturday 19th June got up to uninspiring weather but it got clearer during the morning so we got a bus up to take off. I got set up and ready to go, the wind was across take off and was strong at times. I tried a take off but failed, thought it was going to stay strong and across so packed up. Once I was packed up it started coming straight up the hill and looked really good. Bella was also then keen to fly so we set up and took off. I spent quite a while running to get off the ground but eventually got up. It was strange flying the Arcus again, felt safe and had a pleasant boat around before coming to land.

That evening John registered and we went to the Pizza/Pasta place with Tom Payne for dinner. I had a small salad...

There was one almighty thunderstorm that night and we got up at 2am to wind the awning in just incase we got blown away.

Sunday 20th June was the first day of the PWC (http://www.paraglidingworldcup.org/) I didn't take my gear up the hill and just as well. Almost as soon as we got up there the cloud got lower and it was threatening to rain, so we all went down the hill.

Monday 21st June looked a bit more promising in the morning so we all went up the hill and I took my kit too. Watched all the pilots take off which with the R10's is always interesting. Got a lift down with Stelios and Claudia and went to the goal field. The task was cancelled and we left as soon as we saw the rain coming in. Back to the campsite and it chucked it down. It feels more like Glastonbury rather than Greece... why didn't I bring wellies?

Tuesday 22nd June, woke up to cloudy skies and now it's raining. We were thinking about driving but glad we didn't as it was very relaxing not having to drive and watching the world go by. Unfortunately we didn't have time to do any sightseeing before we got on the ferry, but we had a great view of Venice as the ferry sailed by.

We had one night and one day on the ferry and we camped "open deck" so we slept in the camper van. We took advantage of the small pool to cool down before we arrived in the port at around 8pm. We drove for a while then stopped at a service station over night. Wednesday 16th June stopped in at Olympic Wings, to see Stelios and Claudia. I learnt to paraglide there almost 11 years ago. We camped near the beach and had a swim and a couple of beers. Had a lovely meal at a restaurant in the square.

Thursday 17th June got up and tried the Ozone Swift, the wing was a little big for me so I had to take some ballast. Took off from the site which where I did my first ever flight, I still managed to scream a little when I wasn't sure my harness was going to clear some little bushes! I was amazed how light the glider was and how easy it was to reverse launch in hardly any wind.

We carried on to Drama and beyond to a town called Petroussa and found the free campsite at the football pitch. We went for a meal with Jamie and Bella which was more Italian than Greek but still very good. Didn't have a good night's sleep as it was really hot, my ankle was itching from the bites the day before and the water sprinklers on the football pitch were really loud.

Friday 18th June we went to find the campsite that you pay for, but we had no joy and decided to install ourselves at the football pitch, so now we have electric and WiFi for free and we don't have to drive to HQ every day. It's not much of a town there seems to be a few bars but not much else. Today there has been a thunderstorm so at least it has been cooler. Tonight we are back to cooking for ourselves so I'm going to cook tonight and then we will wonder in to town to support England and have a few drinks to celebrate not to commiserate :-)

British Championships, Slovenia

Well the weather for the competition was really good and we ended up tasking six days out of seven. The first day was my best flying 36.8k which is my third longest flight. Unfortunately it went a bit downhill after that and I didn't fly the last day because it felt a bit too strong for me.

I have decided that I need to fly a lower spec glider which is safer and hopefully more fun to fly. The Artik 2 is a lovely wing but I don't think I fly enough hours, and the new wings can be just as good. I want to stay in the air and not think about wanting to land.

Slow drive to Slovenia

Monday 31st May. We are now in Kobarid, Slovenia, where the competition will start on Sunday 6th May. We woke up to a thunderstorm this morning, but now it's quite sunny. It might be flyable tomorrow, but then it might be rainy for a few days.

We drove from Austria yesterday and we were trying to avoid the motorway as we didn't pay for a vignette, but after we spent ten minutes in first gear to get up a 15% mountain only to spend the same amount of time in first gear getting down the other side we decided to risk the motorway after that! Poor iVan (the camper van's nickname) doesn't really like mountains :-( We took possibly the long way round after that but I couldn't face another drive up and over a mountain visiting ski resorts.

From Germany to Slovenia

We left Neufchateau on Monday pm and headed North in search of good weather and a flying site. Not even out of Neufchateau and we spot an Ozone glider flying over our heads! Later we picked up two guys who had flown from Fumay and were not having much luck hitching back. They took us straight to the site and John set up and had a fly. We went to the campsite only to find it closed at 7 and we couldn't get in. Camped on the car park.

Tuesday was spent parawaiting wind very light on take off then it went the wrong direction anyway. Spent the night IN the campsite.

Wednesday was forecast to be bad weather so we travelled through Luxembourg to Germany. We are staying in a campsite near Dahn and it's in a pine forest with the most amazing sandstone rock formations. We ate at the restaurant which had a Greek theme, but the food was excellent.

Thursday am we went for an early (well early for us) walk in the forest. We have been able to get online to look at the weather, doesn't look great anywhere, so we will keep travelling...
Found a campsite in Germany and we set up and cooked and had a few drinks.

Friday we travelled to see the guys in Austria got there about 4pm and they had had a task, hooray!

Saturday woke up to not great weather so the guys went up to take off only to be sitting in cloud, whilst John whipped my ass at crazy golf (doh!) Well the sun came out and then we saw every one flying in to the goal field, but no task :-( And then the heavens opened!

Sunday drove to Slovenia. We went over this mountain and the van was in first gear most the way up and most the way down. It really wasn't pleasant, so we took the motorway after that. Got to Kobraid at about 9pm and had some food and a couple beers.

Monday woke up to a thunderstorm, but now it's sunny, but a little windy. There is a possibility of some flying tomorrow.

Flying in Beauraing, Belgium

Sunday 23rd May. We drove to about an hour to a ridge about 170m high. The take off was a small clearing in the trees. I eventually got the courage to take off only to get my glove trapped in my brake line. I quickly assessed whether it was going to impede my flight as the glider was above me and really wanted to take off. It wasn't, so I did. In the air I just took my glove off (it was still tightly caught in the line but held on to it the rest of the flight. Luckily it was so warm I didn't get a cold hand. :-)

The rigde was quite long and I had a very nice flight. Probably the longest so far on the Artik 2. John drove most the way and we found a half finished campsite in Belgium. We have the whole place to ourselves! We cycled in to Neufchateau to get some money and stopped for a small beer. Cooked omlette for dinner and had to open the Champagne to celebrate our first night away. I probably landed very close to where I took off which doesn't really work in a comp. Never mind maybe I'll do better at the next round.

The camper van was still in Madrid just as I left it. I spent the night there again was woken by the sound of diggers, construction workers and the like from the field next door. Decided to make my way to Ager and if I found a campsite on the way I would stop over. Didn't think there was a rush as it was looking windy anyway. As it was I didn't find a campsite on the way so at about 8pm got to Ager and found the campsite.

Friday 24th was too windy to fly so I went out on my bike and swam in the pool. Saturday 25th I had two flights :-) Both quite short but very enjoyable all the same. The first flight I had a little collapse and didn't think much of it but my hands were a little shakey for a minute. Flew in the evening it was very smooth but not a lot of lift. Today had a flight and I managed to find a thermal and stayed in it. Hooray at last I can do it! Took some photos too.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/Sm3Ogw7si-I/AAAAAAAAABc/sciZb8NBLdQ/s320/Ager2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363169793554549730" />

Had a flight on Sunday 25th again wasn't a long one but I did get a nice thermal from the lower ridge and worked it back up to take off height. In the afternoon went with Nicky and Mark for a swim in the Lake that you can see in the photo above.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/Sm3PH-K5e-I/AAAAAAAAABk/IDlWbyUOstM/s320/MeFlyingAger.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363170467122871266" />

Piedrahita, Spain. 27th June - 13th July

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 176px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/SmCapwFIohI/AAAAAAAAABM/27pGns-hGCM/s320/PiedrahitaTakeOff.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359453598642643474" />

All I can say is that I didn't come last in the British Open competition in Spain. It was close though. Never mind I should only get better :-) My first day was my best day, flying 27.8k. I landed(not very gracefully) a short distance to the road where I found a bar to wait for a retreive. I didn't fly the second task and the third I didn't make it over the pass. The forth and final task I felt ill so didn't was to take off and risk throwing up in the air and not being able to get down.

The Saturday night was I bit of the the party and came out of the bar and it was light outside! Needless to say I didn't fly that day. The day after I flew, it was just a little further on than the first flight, mind you I was flying 71 kph downwind. Suppose I shouldn't be disappointed about it as it was my second longest flight ever.

I flew the next day but wasn't happy about being thrashed around by the thermals, so landed in the smallest field I could find surrounded by trees and power lines! The flight the next day I borrowed a flight deck so I could take some ballast. Unfortunately I sort of took off but then came crashing down on my knee. It's alright now just a bit bruised.

Looking forward to the Long Mynd round. Hopefully I can take some of this Spanish weather back with me. :-)

SIV in Annecy 22nd - 25th June 2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 202px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/SmCWplvbWaI/AAAAAAAAABE/Lmg9rWB9iq0/s320/AnnecyTakeOff.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359449197820729762" />

The SIV course with Jocky was excellent, even if we did have to get up at the crack of dawn to drive up to take off. I have to thank Scottish Sean for keeping me laughing when I sometimes felt like crying! I will never forget when just before doing symmetric tucks, Sean said it he would think it was like pulling his wife's knickers down.

Another memorable moment would be landing in the bullrushes at the end of the lake. For some unknown reason I couldn't make it to the landing field so had no real option apart from the bullrushes. I landed alright and managed to gather everything up. It was very difficult to find a way out as it was surrounded by trees and bushes. At one point I contemplated getting in the lake and walking round to the campsite but though better of it. Eventually I found a path and I walked across a little stream and felt a snag, I looked round only thinking I'd caught a line on something to find my reserve all strung out behind me. F**k! Well I couldn't carry everything so I unclipped the glider and carried on walking until I found somewhere that I could pack up. Once I was packed up it still took me another twenty minutes to get out. Needless to say I missed my second flight that day but I have got a repacked reserve. :-)

The spiral dives where the most exciting for me as I managed to scream so loud that even Jocky heard me from the boat. :-o It was great to watch the video at de-brief so you could see that what you did looked nothing near as bad as it felt in the air. If I do another SIV I would consider going to Turkey again as you have a lot more height and there are no bullrushes to land in.

BP Cup Round 1 - Scottish Borders

Saturday 9th May - First day of the competition was not flyable. It was raining and windy.

Sunday 10th May - After a little walk up Broughton Heights hill a task was set for a goal field 44k away. The wind was quite light and but to the right of us it looked like it was raining and the clouds to the other side were building nicely. I eventually took off, I went down below take off but managed to scrape back up again. Ten minutes later I had a collapse, when I looked up at the wing I saw more of the top side than I would have liked :-( I let my hands up and it came out and I flew away. It took me a few minutes to persuade myself not to land and I got enough height to go over the back. I landed after 10k which I was a little disappointed about but in another way quite glad to be down on the ground.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/SiAplMt-cdI/AAAAAAAAAA0/sYAnAopWvsQ/s320/IMG_0605.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341314877107368402" />

Monday and Tuesday were beautiful sunny days but too windy. On Monday we did have a long hike up a hill with paragliders only to walk them all the way down again, but before we did we took a walk along the top for a fantastic view (and I don't mean me).

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/SiAqrkYFOeI/AAAAAAAAAA8/QToldlmCxbw/s320/IMG_0610.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341316086048831970" />

Tuesday evening was an open mic night and I eventually after printing the chords for the guitarists sang "Heart of Glass".

Wednesday was the start of the British Open, but because of the bad weather forecast not many people turned up. For good reason too the competition was finally cancelled on Friday morning.

BP Cup results after Round 1

My First XC of 2009

Saturday 2nd May looked a good day to go flying. The wind was quite light but I thought I could do with some ground handling practice if nothing else. When I got to the hill there were already about ten paragliders already flying so there was no time to waste!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/Sf8JXJ3zzII/AAAAAAAAAAc/GSbNCBFMj1A/s320/LongMynd_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331990777221598338" />

I had one short flight of about 15 minutes and slope landed, it wasn't pretty but it was better than a walk up from the bottom. I decided that I had earnt my lunch so had a little break. By the time I finished the wind was starting to pick up nicely so I got ready a off I went again. This time I got in a thermal that took me up to cloudbase, which was about 1000 metres above take off. At that point and with that height I couldn't help but go xc.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/Sf8JoJ53MxI/AAAAAAAAAAk/Pj43zYPxr_M/s320/LongMynd2_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331991069287985938" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uKXmPqK6M64/Sf8J3q6b9nI/AAAAAAAAAAs/G0TKz_8ejTc/s320/LongMynd3_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331991335846803058" />

This is a view of Church Stretton. I was already getting a little cold at this point and had trouble trying to switch off the camera. In the end I used my teeth!

One hour and fifteen minutes later I landed at Brown Clee which is around 20k away. I packed up and walked for about two hours before I got a lift. I was a bit tired and sore the day after but it was worth it. :-)

First Flight

I flew yesterday in Snowdonia, North Wales. It was my first flight in almost ten months so I was a little nervous. It was a long walk up, I'm glad I kept up those gym sessions now. The take off area was just covered in braken, which loves to hold on to the lines. I eventually took off and went straight up, great I thought, then went to the left to stay in the lift then bang, a collapse on the left. I did what I needed to do and it came out. Phew! The rest of the flight was less eventful and after about twenty minutes I landed at the bottom. The red blob is where I took off from.

Camper van search successful

I have found a camper van :-) It's not the van conversion type that I first thought about but having looked inside them I soon realised that there wasn't much space and if I'm going to live in this thing for a few months then I would have to look for something bigger. The camper that I found has a bed above the driver's seat so it's ideal for going to bed without the hassle of moving everything about. Don't need that after a long day and a few drinks!

Took it for a test drive on Monday and I can tell you it's no Subaru. Manual choke and no power steering, but it's great once it warms up and on a straight line :-)

The weather has not been too good for flying, it's been alright for golfing.
